5 Supplements to Support Your Child's Focus and Concentration

2 min read

In an age of digital distraction and academic pressure, many parents are looking for natural ways to support their children's focus and attention. While no supplement replaces sleep, exercise, reduced screen time, and a nutrient-rich diet, certain targeted nutrients can meaningfully support cognitive function.

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA/EPA)

DHA is the primary structural fat of the brain. Children with ADHD and attention difficulties consistently show lower omega-3 levels than neurotypical peers. Multiple studies show omega-3 supplementation improves attention, working memory, and behavior in children. Dose: 500-1000mg DHA daily from a quality fish oil or algae-based supplement.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium deficiency is strongly associated with hyperactivity, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and sleep problems in children. Many children with ADHD are deficient. Magnesium glycinate is well tolerated by children. Start with 100-200mg daily and adjust based on response.

3. Zinc

Zinc is essential for dopamine metabolism and synthesis — the neurotransmitter most centrally involved in attention and executive function. Zinc deficiency is associated with ADHD symptoms and low zinc levels predict poor response to stimulant medications. Dose: 5-10mg daily for children (with food).

4. Iron

Even non-anemic iron deficiency impairs attention and cognitive function. Ferritin levels below 30 ng/mL are associated with ADHD symptoms. Test before supplementing, as excess iron is harmful. If deficient, iron glycinate is well tolerated.

5. B Vitamins (Methylated)

B6, folate, and B12 are essential cofactors in neurotransmitter synthesis. Children with certain MTHFR genetic variants don't convert standard folic acid effectively — methylated forms (methylfolate) bypass this limitation. A quality B complex with methylated forms supports brain chemistry broadly.

Always work with a knowledgeable healthcare provider before adding supplements for a child. Our pediatric providers at Alive and Well can assess your child's specific needs through testing and create a targeted protocol.
