One of the most common barriers to booking a first appointment at a functional medicine clinic is simply not knowing what to expect. Conventional medicine has trained most of us to expect a short visit, a few questions, maybe a blood draw, and a follow-up in three months. Functional medicine works very differently, and if you have never experienced it, it can feel a little uncertain.
We want to remove that barrier entirely. Here is exactly what your first visit to Alive and Well looks like, from booking to follow-up.
Step 1: Booking Your Initial Consultation
You can book online at aliveandwell.health or by calling us at 512-580-5775. When you schedule, you will be matched with a provider based on your primary concerns, whether those are hormonal symptoms, fatigue, gut issues, weight concerns, aesthetics, or simply a desire for a more comprehensive baseline evaluation.
Before your appointment, you will complete a thorough intake form that covers your health history, current symptoms, medications and supplements, lifestyle habits, and health goals. This is not a formality. Your provider will have reviewed it carefully before you arrive.
Step 2: Your Initial Consultation
Your first consultation at Alive and Well is typically 60 minutes. This is not a rushed 15-minute visit. Your provider will sit down with you, review your intake, and have a real conversation about your history and your goals.
They will ask questions you may not have been asked before: How is your sleep quality, not just duration? What does your energy look like throughout the day, and when does it drop? Have you noticed any changes in your digestion, your skin, your mood, your libido, or your ability to recover from exercise? What has changed in the past year, or the past five years, that you feel might be relevant?
These questions are not casual. They are clinical tools that help your provider map the trajectory of your health and identify where dysfunction may have started.
Step 3: Lab Ordering
Based on your consultation, your provider will order a customized lab panel designed to investigate the specific concerns and patterns they identified in your intake. This is not a one-size-fits-all basic panel. It is a targeted evaluation of the systems most likely to be driving your symptoms.
Depending on your situation, this may include a full thyroid panel, comprehensive hormonal assessment, advanced cardiovascular markers, micronutrient testing, inflammatory markers, gut health analysis, metabolic function markers, and more. Most lab draws can be done the same day as your consultation, or at a follow-up lab visit shortly after.
Step 4: Results Review and Care Plan
When your results are in, typically within one to two weeks, you will return for your results review appointment. This is a dedicated visit focused entirely on interpreting your lab findings and translating them into an actionable care plan.
Your provider will walk through each significant finding, explain what it means in plain language, and describe the clinical context: how these markers interact with each other and with your symptoms, and what addressing them looks like. You will leave this appointment with a specific, prioritized plan that may include targeted supplementation, dietary modifications, hormone optimization, IV therapy, specific wellness therapies, or referrals to appropriate specialists within our team.
Step 5: Follow-Up and Ongoing Partnership
Your care at Alive and Well does not end after the initial protocol. Your provider will schedule a follow-up to assess your response to the initial interventions, repeat key lab markers to document progress, and adjust your plan based on what the data shows. Many of our patients become long-term care partners who come in regularly for ongoing optimization and preventive monitoring.
What Makes This Different from a Conventional Appointment
The most common thing we hear after a first visit is: "This is the first time a doctor has actually listened to me." That is not an accident. It is the design. We built our model around the belief that understanding a patient's full story is both the most clinically powerful and the most basic human element of good medicine.
If you are ready to experience that for yourself, we are ready to meet you. Book your first appointment online or call us at 512-580-5775. We look forward to getting to know you.
