What Type of Yoga Class is Right For You?

2 min read

Yoga has evolved into hundreds of styles, making it simultaneously more accessible and more confusing for beginners. Understanding the differences between major yoga styles helps you find the right match for your body, goals, and temperament.

Hatha Yoga

The foundational style from which most modern yoga derives. Hatha classes typically move at a slower pace, holding poses longer and focusing on alignment and breath. Excellent for beginners and those looking for a more meditative, less physically demanding practice. A good starting point for anyone new to yoga.

Vinyasa Flow

The most popular style in Western studios. Vinyasa links movement with breath in a continuous flow, moving dynamically from pose to pose. Classes vary widely in intensity — some are quite vigorous. Good for those who prefer movement over stillness and want cardiovascular benefits alongside flexibility and strength.

Yin Yoga

A deeply restorative practice in which poses are held for 3-5 minutes, targeting the deep connective tissues — fascia, ligaments, and joint capsules. Complementary to more active practices, yin is particularly valuable for flexibility, stress relief, and those recovering from injury. Accessible to most fitness levels despite its intensity of sensation.

Restorative Yoga

The most gentle form — poses are fully supported by props and held passively for 10-20 minutes. The focus is on activating the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting deep relaxation and nervous system healing. Ideal for stress, anxiety, illness recovery, and anyone who needs to slow down.

Ashtanga

A rigorous, structured practice following a specific sequence of poses. Physically demanding and disciplined — best suited for those with prior yoga experience seeking a consistent, challenging practice with a clear progression.

What's Right for You?

Consider your goals: flexibility and strength suggest Vinyasa or Ashtanga; stress and sleep suggest Yin or Restorative; pain management suggests Hatha or Yin; general fitness and mood support suggests Vinyasa. Many practitioners benefit from combining styles across the week.
