Back To School: 5 Tips To Keep Kids Healthy

2 min read

Back to school season means more than new backpacks and school supplies — it means your child is about to be in close contact with hundreds of other kids, sharing germs on a daily basis. Here are five evidence-backed tips to keep your kids healthy through the school year.

1. Prioritize Sleep

Sleep is the single most important factor in immune function. School-age children (6-12) need 9-12 hours per night; teens need 8-10 hours. Chronic sleep deprivation dramatically increases susceptibility to infection. Set consistent bedtimes, remove devices from bedrooms, and create a wind-down routine. Everything else on this list is less effective without adequate sleep.

2. Support the Gut Microbiome

Approximately 70% of the immune system resides in the gut. A healthy, diverse microbiome is essential for robust immune function. Feed it with prebiotic fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes) and fermented foods (yogurt, kefir). Limit sugar and ultra-processed foods that feed harmful bacteria and reduce diversity.

3. Optimize Key Nutrients

Vitamin D, zinc, and vitamin C are particularly important for immune function. Many children are deficient in vitamin D regardless of sun exposure. Consider testing and supplementing appropriately. A quality children's multivitamin provides a foundation, but targeted supplementation may be warranted based on testing.

4. Manage Stress

Academic pressure, social dynamics, and schedule changes all create stress for kids. Chronic stress suppresses immune function. Make space for downtime, outdoor play, and creative activities. Ensure children have opportunities to talk about their feelings and experiences.

5. Teach Foundational Hygiene

Thorough handwashing remains one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness. Teach children to wash hands properly — with soap, for at least 20 seconds — before eating, after using the bathroom, and after blowing their nose. Avoid touching the face, particularly the eyes, nose, and mouth.
