Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that’s been around for about 2,500 years. It’s used to support wellness and improve overall mental and physical well-being. The acupuncturist places needles into specific points on the skin to help activate an energy in the body, called qi. According to traditional Chinese medicine, qi is the lifeforce energy in the body — it helps regulate and move things in the body to keep us well. Stress, environmental factors, lifestyle behaviors, and genetics are some of the things that can block qi in the body. The needles help to unblock or move qi to other areas in the body to help support wellness.
Acupuncture needles are solid, stainless steel needles that are usually not much larger than a strand of hair. Acupuncture needles are placed at a very shallow depth and go between tissues, making them less painful than a typical injection.
You might be more sensitive in certain areas, but acupuncture shouldn’t hurt. If you feel pain, tell your acupuncturist. They’ll adjust the needles or choose other points. Their goal is not to make you feel pain. They do a lot of work to position you properly and make sure you feel comfortable.
Indeed you can do acupuncture or massage while pregnant. It is safe and our practitioners are very well versed in how to treat pregnant women. Please let us know when you book a treatment if you are pregnant and how far along you are.
From spa treatments to functional medicine, Alive and Well offers a holistic health ecosystem at each of our three locations.
Josh is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Following a visit to Austin to see family in medical residency fifteen years ago, he and his wife Kari were hooked and promptly moved south. They have two lively boys – the eldest at Texas State, the youngest at nearby Lake Travis High.
He’s die-hard Oklahoma State alumnus, an avid college football fan, a dog and jeep lover, the guy we call for a good dad joke!
Josh originally envisioned being a veterinarian, but all the fur, teeth and blood didn’t suit him like the cleanliness of a pharmacy lab. He was introduced to compounding by a pharmacist in Marble Falls in 2012. Besides serving in the Army at Ft. Stewart outside Savannah, GA, he’s been compounding ever since.
When asked “Why do you like dealing with compounds versus traditional scripts?”
“It’s more collaborative with the provider to ensure the patient gets the best care, versus just counting scripts. I enjoy talking through the process of the right fit for the patient, i.e., which form, strength, combinations, taste, etc., would get the best outcome.”
Marco has been a pharmacy technician for 19 years. His career began in the retail setting at Walgreens, moving on to in-patient hospital pharmacy, finally settling into custom compounding for the past 9 years.
In addition to pharmacy compounding, Marco has also taken a keen interest in natural supplementation and homeopathy as someone who’s benefited on a personal level. He enjoys one-on-one interactions with patients and clients, helping them reach their health and life goals not only through conventional pharmacy but natural treatments as well.
Marco has lived in Austin since 2009 and lives with his partner, a cat, and two lovable dogs Concord and Gizmo that frequent Alive + Well. In his free time, Marco enjoys spending time with friends and family as well as traveling as frequently as possible.
Holly has been a technician for 10 years working in long term care, retail, hospital, and home infusion pharmacy. She found her home at Alive + Well first in 2016 and then again in 2020 after a year working in home infusion pharmacy.
She’s lived in Spicewood for 10+ years and the surrounding hill country for over 20 years. She loves spending time with her two kiddos, Marley who is 11 and Mary who is 6. She also has 6 dogs, 2 pigs, 2 horses and 4 chickens all on the several acres share with her family.
In her spare time with my family, friends and kiddos, she enjoys being in nature, going on hikes, floating the river or soaking in the sun on the coast. If she’s not outside you can find her watching documentaries, reading, and trying to soak in any new information to try and broaden her views on life.
Travis has been a technician for almost 3 years. With an initial background in retail pharmacy, he was offered a position at Alive and Well in Fall of 2021, and immediately seized the opportunity.
Travis grew up in North Dallas after moving from Southern California at a young age. After being accepted into UT’s undergraduate biochemistry program in 2017, Travis relocated to central Austin where he now resides. He has since completed his undergraduate degree and started the Doctorate of Pharmacy program at UT Austin. Travis is currently interested in research, compounding, and the pharmaceutical industry and is expected graduate in Spring 2025.
Travis loves tasting the local cuisine in Austin with friends and family. If you happen to see Travis at the Alive and Well facility, he is always eager to chat! With a recently earned pharmacy intern license, Travis is excited for a future at Alive and Well where he can build his not only his technical and clinical skills, but also communication and teamwork skills.
